Davidson Young Scholars Application Process

In order to apply, please download and complete the 2008 Young Scholars Application (PDF)*, providing signatures in all designated areas. Upon review of the application, additional testing or information may be requested in order to determine the applicant’s eligibility.

All of the following information must be included with the application for it to be considered complete and sent to the review committee. Please make copies of these materials as they will become the confidential property of the Davidson Institute and will not be returned.

  • Evidence of extreme intellectual abilities must be submitted in the form of both an individually administered IQ test AND an achievement test or talent search/college placement test, as listed in the Davidson Young Scholars Qualification Criteria. Please submit complete assessment reports for each test included with the application. At least one of the tests must have been administered no more than two years prior to when the Davidson Young Scholars application is submitted.

      Applicants who do not have both types of testing or who have not been formally assessed due to financial constraints may submit a portfolio with three original pieces of the applicant’s work that demonstrate his/her advanced academic precocity. The most informative samples showcase your child’s abilities and set them apart from age or class peers. In order for the Applications Review Committee to assess the child’s natural abilities, samples of unassisted work are ideal. Bloom’s taxonomy may provide helpful guidelines for selecting sample items requiring analysis, synthesis and evaluation, as these components tend to generate more compelling portfolio samples than those which match up with the lower levels of the taxonomy. Read a description of Bloom’s Taxonomy. Examples may include autonomous projects, expository or creative writing, independent work that is 2 to 3 grade levels above age peers, or DVD/videotape recordings. Please date all samples with the child’s age and grade level and briefly describe all items submitted so we are able to view the items in the context of the applicant’s age and circumstances of the work.
  • Copies of all other standardized assessments administered, including annual standardized achievement test administered at the applicant's school or as part of a homeschooling curriculum;

  • Copies of all Individual Education Plans, if provided by the school;

  • At least one recommendation using the Davidson Young Scholars Recommendation Form (pages 12 & 13), from someone outside the family who did not administer testing to the applicant. The recommender must fax or mail the Form directly to the Davidson Institute for Talent Development.
